First squad
Rafinha was called for the first time for the Brazilian national squad in January 2008 for a friendly game against Ireland, held in Dublin. However, in his first time, he was on the bench throughout the game and did not go to the field.His first appearance happened two months later, in a friendly game against Sweden in London. Rafinha replaced Daniel Alves in the second half and had good participation in the game.
After being one of the highlights of the Olympic selection in Berlin, the coach Dunga has further opportunity to the right defender, who was called to join Brazil for World Cup Qualifiers in matches against Chile and Bolivia.
Youth Squad
After a great performance in Coritiba, Rafinha was invited to be part of the selection for the World Cup Under-20 in 2005, which was held in the Netherlands. It was this competition where the player showed his potential for Europeans.One of the best in that squad, Rafinha has drawn attention in quarter-final. The defender scored the goal of victory by 2-1 for Brazil against Germany. Soon , he was hired by Schalke 04. Brazil finished that competition in third place.
Rafinha also disputed the Olympics in Beijing, with Brazilian under-23 selection. Rafinha again achieved good performances and helped conquesting the bronze medal.
